Create Horizontal Text Crawl in Adobe Premiere Pro CC (2018)

Learn how to Create a Horizontal Text Crawl in Adobe Premiere Pro!

A horizontal text crawl is a great way to let information slowly flow on the bottom of the screen. The horizontal text crawl is also a great effect to use to simulate a news cast. With just a couple of button clicks, we can create this effect in Adobe Premiere Pro. Today, we go over how to create the Horizontal Text Crawl in Adobe Premiere Pro CC.

How to Create the Horizontal Text Crawl in Adobe Premiere Pro CC (2018)

Setup the Sequence

  1. Create a new sequence by clicking on File and New Sequence
    • Ensure the footage is in at sequence
  2. Create an area where the text crawl will appear (this is optional)
    • Click on the square or pen icon and hold/drag for placement on your footage
    • On the right hand side, under appearance, choose a color and click on fill

Create the Title

  1. Navigate to the Legacy Title tool
    • Click on File, New, and Legacy Title (a new window will open)
    • Provide a name for the crawl
  2. To make it easier, click on the Show Background icon
  3. Now use your cursor to position the starting point for the text
    • Add your text by using copy and paste
    • Click on the arrow (first icon on left hand side) to position the text

Animate the Title

  1. Click on Roll/Crawl Options
    • Title Type (choose one)
      • Crawl left (text will scroll right to left)
      • Crawl right (text will scroll left to right)
    • Timing (choose one or both)
      • Start Off Screen (text will begin off screen)
      • End Off Screen (text will end off screen
    • Click Ok and exit the Legacy Title tool
  2. On the left hand side of the screen, locate the crawl created in step 3b
    • Drag the crawl next to the sequence
    • Drag the crawl to the desired duration
      • Note the speed is the duration of text (you may have to reduce text or increase time to allow text scroll at a slower speed)

And that’s it. Now you can create a horizontal text crawl wherever you want, with as much text as you want. Make sure to bookmark this page so that you can come back anytime you need a refresher! Let me know in the comments of the video, or below if you have any questions or comments.
