How to Quickly Insert Clips in Between Premiere Pro CC (2024)

Learn to quickly insert clips between other clips in Premiere Pro CC

I find one of the most important things to learn on the job is how to increase speed without reducing quality. This usually comes from a collection of small tips and skills that slowly begin to add up. Today we are going to cover an important aspect of the editing process, adding clips between other clips in Premiere Pro.

To do this we are going to be learning a quick keyboard shortcut. These allow you to continue editing while utilizing not only the mouse, but your other hand as well. It allows you to quickly perform actions that would otherwise take a large amount of extra moves. Today we go over a very simple, but very powerful shortcut to insert clips. We go over how to quickly insert clips between other clips in Premiere Pro CC (2018).

This effect is essentially one key, ctrl. When you drag your footage into the timeline, hold down the ctrl key while dragging. (command on a mac). By holding down this key, you will switch the insertion mode to “insert”. This will take all of the footage and push it forward on the timeline, making a hole for the footage you are inserting.

It not only moves forward the video, but all of your sound, effects, and graphics. This ensures no work is destroyed. A very simple, but very powerful keyboard shortcut to memorize!

I find this a really helpful thing to learn while making a second or third pass on your edit. Just like a good article or book, multiple drafts are usually necessary. The issue with video editing is with each pass more effects, audio clips, etc are added. So learning this quick keyboard shortcut can help you make these edits quicker and easier. I think this also helps increase morale and create more enthusiasm for working on the draft.
